State Map of Russia

Russia, the world’s largest country, is administratively divided into several types of federal subjects that represent its vast territorial expanse and diverse cultures. The country consists of 85 federal subjects, including republics, krais (territories), oblasts (regions), federal cities, autonomous oblasts, and autonomous okrugs (districts). Each federal subject has its own government, but they all fall under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation.

Russian Administrative Divisions

  1. Republics: Russia contains 22 republics, each of which is home to a specific ethnic minority with its own official language and constitution. Notable republics include Tatarstan, Chechnya, and Bashkortostan. Republics enjoy a high degree of autonomy in cultural and political matters. These regions have a high degree of autonomy, often based on ethnic identity, with their own constitutions and official languages.
